The Happy News

Illustrations for The Happy News (March edition) - A positive news publication created by Emily Coxhead.

Playful illustrations to compliment two different stories for the March issue. I created two playful and uplifting illustrations that evoke positivity and joy. My goal was to capture the heartwarming essence of the stories while keeping the artwork fun, engaging, and full of character.

“It's always a pleasure working with Charlie. Her illustrations are charming, creative and efficient. ”

Illustrating the piece for “Family Light Up Street in Memory of Son” was both a touching and emotional experience for me. As a parent, I couldn’t help but feel deeply for their loss, and I found it challenging at times to capture the story in a way that honoured their son’s memory while celebrating the incredible way they are turning their grief into something positive.

Seeing how the family have transformed their home into a dazzling display of Christmas lights to raise funds for charity is truly inspiring, and I wanted my illustration to reflect both the love and the light they are sharing with their community.

One of the stories highlights The Rewilding Denmarkfield project, which spans 90 acres north of Perth, Scotland. The area has produced extraordinary results in just two years. Once dominated by barley fields with little biodiversity, the site now hosts a flourishing ecosystem that has boosted the local bumblebee population |16 times over.

I have illustrated many bees and plants over the years, however i wanted to ensure the 'Letting Nature Lead' illustration depicted the exact type of bees and plant species relevant to the story. I spent time researching different types of bees and their shapes and characteristics. It was a fun challenge to try and ensure I incorporated enough detailing to be authentic, yet also in-keeping with my playful style. The research stage is one of my favourite parts to any project!
